Thailand - in the land of absolute heat
Thailand:
Our heat journey leads to hot Thailand, so much smaller than nearby China, but always worth a trip. Thailand could also be called the "land of absolute heat".
However, it can only be experienced by visiting this versatile country yourself, because almost every dish there is spicy in some way. Restaurants in particular certainly don`t miss out on the competitive advantage due to their well-known spicy cuisine.
In general, chillies in Thailand are usually called "prik". The most commonly used chilli varieties in Thai cuisine are: the Prik Kee Noo (the "bird`s eye chilli") with a spiciness of 8 and the Prik Chi Faa with a spiciness of 6. Both chilli varieties are used in green or red ripeness.
Many dishes are decorated with little red flakes called "pit-bon", which can make diners` faces bright red, cause them to gasp and break out in a sweat.
For Thais, spicy food is a must, because it puts you in a good mood and is healthy at the same time. The spicy Sriracha sauce is on almost every table in the restaurant and Nam Prik (hell water) is served with the meal. What is it?A drink made of water, chilli pieces, sugar and fish sauce, guaranteed hot!
As a tourist in Thailand, avoiding the spicy food can actually be really difficult, but do you really want to avoid this particular highlight?
But here`s a good tip: if it really does get too spicy, it might help if you remember the following: Massaman curry is known as the mildest - green curry as the hottest curry in Thailand.
And if you have really crossed your personal spiciness limit, you should do as the Thais do, because they "extinguish" with sugar and rice.
If after all the experiences in the tourist metropolises you would also like to visit the hottest regions of Thailand, you should go further south, because the further south you are - the hotter the curries become.
However, if tourists want to escape the spiciness for a day and relax, they should ask at the hotel; usually the receptionists know the best tips for restaurants and bars.
Otherwise, it is important to enjoy the friendliness of the people and the beauty of nature and to take home the absolutely incredible recipes for the cookbook at home.
Useful tips for a holiday in Thailand:
- Find out about the customs and traditions of the Thais beforehand and show them respect, because Thais are very religious and attach great importance to friendliness and gestures.
- Insulting the Thai king and royal family is severely punished.
- Useful for ordering food:
"phed"= spicy
"phed mah" = very hot
"phed mak maah" =challenging even for Thais
"Mai phed kah/krab" = not spicy.
