Columbine Blue (Aquilegia) Seeds
Info: The aquilegia Blue Columbine comes from the USA, where it occurs mainly in the Rocky Mountains and there it is the emblem flower of the state of Colorado. In Europe, columbine was already a popular plant in local herb gardens in the Middle Ages. Today the undemanding plant with its colourful, filigree flowers is a popular accent in the gardens. The plants grow to a height of approx. 30 - 60 cm.
Sowing & cultivation: From the end of April, the seeds can simply be spread loosely. Between October and March the perennials can also be propagated vegetatively by division. Aquilegia likes both sunny and semi-shade locations and needs a well-drained and nutrient-rich soil which should be as calcareous as possible. In case of prolonged drought, the plants must be watered. Strong root competition tends to make columbines less likely at their location.
