Hyacinth Beans Seeds
Info: A shady climber with stunning purple flowers followed by purple pods which can be used in curries
The hyacinth bean is also called Egyptian or Lablab bean and is native to South-East Africa and India. Like all beans, it is a vine plant and it has beautiful, pleasantly fragrant, pink-purple flowers. Their fruits can be eaten as young pods, e.g. in curry dishes. Seeds are easy to keep, and you can use them next year in the garden. Since the plant does not tolerate frost, it is cultivated in Europe as an annual plant.
Sowing & cultivation: sowing in March in pots in pre-cultivation or from May / June directly after the last frosts. As a tropical plant, the hyacinth bean needs temperatures above 20 ° C, but relatively little water. It does not tolerate water-logging, the soil should be permeable, but nutritious. These vigorous growers do require a sturdy support that is at least 2-2,5 m high. Many gardeners grow this lovely vine on a sturdy trellis, fence or arbor.
