Parsnip Hollow Crown Seeds
Info: Parsnips had been esteemed on the tables of Europe since the time of Tiberian Rome until the potato displaced it by being blander and more versatile. For several years now, she has returned to Central Europe. `Hollow Crown` has long smooth tapering white roots, a tender texture and delicious sweet flavour. You can eat them fresh, as steamed vegetables or soup. The best flavour comes in cooler areas when parsnips are harvested after the first frosts as this causes their flesh to convert starches into sugar.
Sowing & cultivation: Parsnips need a deep soil, that has recently been manured and is stone free to avoid forking. From end of March sow three or four seeds at 15cm intervals, 1 cm deep in rows 25 to 30cm apart. When the seedlings are about 2.5cm high thin out to leave one seedling per 15cm station. Parsnip germination rates can be low and seeds germinate slowly, but once they have germinated they are really easy to grow. Water regularly. Harvesting from mid September to early April.
