Lettuce Arctic King Seeds

Info: As the name suggests, this variety is specially bred for autumn sowing and overwinters as a young plant before it can be harvested in the following spring. `Arctic King` is well known for its exceptional cold resistance. This large Butterhead variety produces tasty light green heads with crinkled leaves and a tight lime green center head. The leaves are tender, crisp and juicy.

Sowing & cultivation: Sow outdoors from mid August to mid September. For harvesting in late April to mid May. Seed depth 6 - 12 mm in short rows about 20 - 30 cm apart. When the seedlings are about 2cm tall, thin them out. A rich soil is excellent for lettuce, but the crop will also do well in average garden soil. Fertilize the soil with compost or horn meal before sowing. Watering is essential, the plants need almost constantly moist ground as dry soil will cause the plants to put their energy into producing flowers. The young plantlets are better able to withstand the cold than older plants. In heavy frost use perforated foil or cloches as cold protection.
