Radicchio Palla Rossa Seeds
Info: Radicchio Palla rossa is a classic Italian autumn and witer salad. It grows in round heads with large leaves, changing its colour from green to red when the weather becomes cooler. The stems remain in a pure white. If it matures during the warmest months of summer, the leaves turn bitter (also with water stress). Radicchio grown in the autumn or over the winter retains its sweet flavour. That is why sowing in July is an option, so that you can harvest in late autumn. Radicchio adds flavour, colour and a crisp texture to salads; it is eaten raw with a little olive oil or can be grilled and baked.
Sowing & Cultivation: The sowing takes place in rows, thinly distributed and 1-2 cm deep. Then cover with soil and water regularly. Separate young plants. Harvest time is in June to November. Radicchio likes a sunny site with nutrient-rich, loamy soil.
Radicchio can also be grown as a winter vegetable. Then it is sown in late summer and in the autumn the thick roots are excavated and buried in a dark, warm cellar (for example heating room) in a sand box. About three weeks later, soft bleached heads occur, which then can be harvested.
