Habanero
Habanero
(Red, Orange, Purple, Suriname Red, White, Yellow, Chocolate)
Spiciness: 10 (to 500.000 SHU)
General Info: The Habanero chili (Capsicum chinense) is one of the spiciest chilies in the world and is around 50 times spicier than a Jalapeno. It is characterised above all by its unique fruity flavour, which is sometimes described as having a peachy note.
The Habanero variety probably comes from the Yucatan region of Mexico. While the name “Habanero” means “from Havana” in English, they are only found occasionally in Cuba. They are still mainly cultivated on the Yucatan peninsula, although there they are predominantly orange and yellow Habanero varieties. The red, white or chocolate coloured varieties mostly come from the Caribbean or the southern states of the USA.
Plant growth habit: The plants are bushy and reach up to 100 cm in height. The plants usually produce many white flowers and correspondingly, many fruits. The thin-walled fruits are round and wrinkled, and grow up to approx. 5 cm long and 3 cm thick. They resemble small peppers in their shape, but warning, they are incomparably spicier! Depending on their type, the fruits ripen from green to orange, red, yellow, white, violet or chocolate brown, and have a ripening time of 95 to 110 days.
Cultivation Tips: Habaneros need a lot of warmth. The seeds germinate at a constant temperature of 22°C after approx. 12 to 21 days. As the fruits have a long ripening period, you should cultivate the plants in pots and put them in a particularly sunny and protected place.
In our Shop you can find many different varieties of Habanero in all colours to cultivate yourself.
Culinary: Although Habaneros are thin-walled, they have a lot of flavourful juice. This makes them particularly suitable for cooking and for making sauces and marinades. Due to their intense tropically fruity flavour, they are a must for every salsa, and harmonise particularly well with tropical fruits. Only experienced chili lovers who can tolerate high levels of spiciness should consume them fresh. However, they are also suitable for drying, for cooking or for stuffing. In any case, you should always wear gloves when handling them!
