Strawberry Tree Seeds
Info: Strawberry tree (arbutus) comes from the Mediterranean region and is one of the most beautiful container plants. However, it has nothing to do with strawberries, but is an evergreen hardy plant, whose fruit reminds of strawberries. However, the fruits are only slightly sweet and not particularly tasty, hence the Latin name "unedo", which means "I only eat one". The fruit takes a long time to mature, so that you can see the pretty flowers and fruits at the same time between the dark green leaves.
Sowing & cultivation: Soak the seeds in warm water for 5-6 days, then sow one seed per pot and cover only slightly with soil as the seeds need light to germinate. The strawberry tree doesn`t like tranplantation, so it should be repotted in his life only once. Strawberry trees like a sandy to moderately loamy soil, which is well drained and can be quite nutrient-poor. It grows well in soils with an acid pH-value. Do not allow to dry out, but avoid water-logging. In summer, choose a sunny, sheltered place outside. The best way to overwinter is in the cool winter garden or an unheated, sunny stairway (with a temperature between 5-18°C).
