Info: The San Marzano Scatalone tomato is so named because "scatolone" means "carton" and the tomatoes can be picked pink and stored in a carton to ripen. It is a variety of the famous San Marzano tomato, but grows higher than the original. The tomatoes are red and plum-shaped and have an excellent flavour with low acidic. They are great for slicing and also one of the best cooking tomato in the world. You can use them for stuffing and sauces.
Care: You can grow the San Marzano Scatalone tomatoes inside the house, in a greenhouse or outdoors. The optimal germination temperature is between 20 and 25°C, and germination occurs after 8 - 14 days. You can speed up the germination process if you leave the seeds to soak overnight in a damp cloth. You should wait until after the last frost to plant your chosen plants.
Tomatoes need fresh, well-fertilised, permeable soil which is kept moist (but not wet!). They should be planted in a sunny, protected place with at least 6 hours of sunlight - preferably more.
