Romanesco Seeds
Info: Romanesco is a really beautiful vegetable: Each complex, symmetrical head features whorls of pointy, bright green `florets`, in a magic design, an amazing example of phyllotaxis - the fractal patterning that can appear in nature. It is delicious with a flavour somewhere between broccoli and cauliflower, with a sweet nuttiness that is bereft of the slightly bitter edge cauliflower can have, children tend to like it for this very reason. If you cook it whole, dunking it in boiling water for a few minutes until tender, it`s one of the most impressive greens you can serve.
Sowing & cultivation: Sow Apr-May directly into a prepared seedbed. Sow 10 mm deep into rows 20cm apart. Can be sown indoors Feb-Apr. Transplant to final growing position 5 weeks from sowing, 15 cm apart for mini-heads or 45 cm apart for full-size growth. Prefers a sunny position on a soil with plenty of well rotted organic matter, acidic soil should have lime added. Harvesting from August, when the heads are still tight and firm, cut in the morning.
