Amaranth Red Army Seeds
Info: This fast-growing amaranth is particularly suitable for the garden. Although it is an annual plant, it grows quickly and reaches a height of up to 1.5 meters within a few weeks. The plants are very decorative and the bright red leaves and blossoms are a real color experience in the garden. Originally, the amaranth comes from the South American Andes and is cultivated there as protein-rich cereal grains.
The harvest of the leaves should occur before flowering, otherwise the pleasant aroma becomes bitter. The young leaves are tender and nutritious and have a delicate pea-like flavour. The attractive leaves can be used at babyleaf stage for salad or garnish, or can be left to mature for steamed vegetable or soups.
Sowing & cultivation: Sowing and growing under glass from mid-February to mid-April. Sow the seed thinly and cover them only slightly with soil ("light germinator"). From May, Amaranth can also be sown outdoors. The plants need a sunny place and a nutrient-rich soil. The leaves must be harvested before flowering. Remove any flowers as soon as their buds appear otherwise leaf production will come to an end.
