Sweetcorn Golden Bantam Seeds
Info: Sweetcorn `Golden Bantam` is a delicious heirloom from the US and made yellow sweet corn popular in the 1920s. Before this time people only wanted white corn as white signified refinement and quality. The plants grow to about six feet and produce seven inch ears loaded with eight to ten rows of sweet, plump, golden kernels. The corn is sweet and very tasty and almost melts in the mouth. It must be eaten immediately after harvest (cooked or grilled), otherwise the sugar will be converted into starch and it will not taste as good.
What is special about Bantam corn is that it is seed-proof, in contrast to almost all other maize varieties grown today. That means you can grow maize plants from the seeds again next year.
Sowing & cultivation: Sow from May on outdoors. Use a dibber to make 2.5cm holes and sow two or three seeds every 30cm with 45 cm between rows. Sweetcorn grows best if planted in large blocks. It likes free-draining, moisture retentive and nutrient-rich soil. The plants are shallow rooted: protection from winds and water loss in the soil is very important.
