Sweetcorn Oaxacan Green Seeds
Info: Corn `Oaxacan Green` is a very old maize cultivated by the Mexican Zapotec Indians in the province of Oaxaca. The plants can grow up to 3 meters tall and carry large ears with kernels in different shades of green. Traditionally, the dried kernels are ground to a wonderful green flavoured flour that is used for tamales and tortillas. You can also consume the ears in the immature state (milk ripeness) as vegetable corn.
Sowing & cultivation: Sow from May on outdoors. Use a dibber to make 2.5cm holes and sow two or three seeds every 30cm with 45 cm between rows. Sweetcorn grows best if planted in large blocks. It likes free-draining, moisture retentive and nutrient-rich soil. The plants are shallow rooted: protection from winds and water loss in the soil is very important.
