Sweetcorn Painted Mountain Seeds
Info: The corn `Painted Mountain` is an ancient and beautiful Indian variety with large, long ears with very large kernels in bright colours from yellow to red to purple / black. The plants can grow up to 2 meters tall and are very decorative and colourful as well: there are red-leaved, green-leaved and plants with green leaves on red stems. The flowers also appear differently coloured on the plants: red, yellow, greenish, white. The cobs can be eaten young as vegetable corn or used ripe and dried for maize flour production.
Sowing & cultivation: Sow from May on outdoors. Use a dibber to make 2.5cm holes and sow two or three seeds every 30cm with 45 cm between rows. Sweetcorn grows best if planted in large blocks. It likes free-draining, moisture retentive and nutrient-rich soil. The plants are shallow rooted: protection from winds and water loss in the soil is very important.
