Chicory Variegata di Castelfranco Seeds
Info: The Chicory Variegata di Castelfranco is a very pretty and decorative variety with attractive rosette-shaped light green leaves which are flecked with purple to red-violet variegations. Some call this variety "Rose of winter". It has a fresh and a delicate taste that is sweet to pleasantly bitter and a crisp texture that makes this chicory so special. It is very suitable as winter salad, the harvest begins in December and lasts well into winter.
Sowing & Cultivation: The sowing takes place in rows, thinly distributed and 1-2 cm deep. Then cover with soil and water regularly. Separate young plants. Sowing in summer, then harvest time is in winter (November to January). Chicoree/Radicchio likes a sunny site with nutrient-rich, loamy soil.
Chicory can also be bleached, then in the autumn the thick roots are excavated and buried in a dark, warm cellar (for example heating room) in a sand box. About three weeks later, soft bleached heads occur, which then can be harvested.
