Lettuce Claremont Seeds
Info: Lettuce `Claremont` is a small Romaine type with crisp leaves, excellent vigour, outstanding flavour and very little waste. It has a good resistance to bolting, and very good mildew resistance. The leaves are crisp, crunchy, tender and sweet which makes this variety very popular. The best time for sowing is in spring as this lettuce does not germinate well in high temperatures so keep summer sowings shaded and very well watered.
Sowing & cultivation: Sow outdoors from mid August to mid September. For harvesting in late April to mid May. Seed depth 6 - 12 mm in short rows about 20 - 30 cm apart. When the seedlings are about 2cm tall, thin them out. A rich soil is excellent for lettuce, but the crop will also do well in average garden soil. Fertilize the soil with compost or horn meal before sowing. Watering is essential, the plants need almost constantly moist ground as dry soil will cause the plants to put their energy into producing flowers. The young plantlets are better able to withstand the cold than older plants. In heavy frost use perforated foil or cloches as cold protection.
