Lettuce Black Seeded Simpson Seeds
Info: The Lettuce `Black Seeded Simpson` is one of the earliest and the hardiest of all lettuce varieties. In addition, it was named the tastiest lettuce in the UK by the newspaper Daily Telegraph in 2006. It is suitable for cultivation in the garden in rows as well as in boxes and containers on balcony or terrace. After 45 days, the lattuce is ready for harvest and the leaves can be cut with the scissors. Or you leave it growing to make huge and crunchy hearts.
Sowing & cultivation: Sow outdoors successively between March to August. Seed depth 6 - 12 mm in short rows about 20 - 30 cm apart. When the seedlings are about 2cm tall, thin them out. If you sow every three weeks, you have fresh lettuce all summer long. A rich soil is excellent for lettuce, but the crop will also do well in average garden soil. Fertilize the soil with compost or horn meal before sowing. Watering is essential, the plants need almost constantly moist ground as dry soil will cause the plants to put their energy into producing flowers.
